About Bobby Hunter
Bobby Hunter grew up in Grand Rapids Michigan, home of the late, great Harold Worst. He started playing pool in 1969 at the age of 16, a few years too late, unfortunately to get a chance to see Worst play. Straight pool was very popular in the Midwest at the time, and from the first time he saw the game played, he knew what he wanted to do. By the time he was 18, his high run was over 100 balls. By the time he was 21, he had scored tournament wins (9-ball) over Steve Cook, Louie Roberts, and Joe Balsis. He played in his first World Straight Pool Championship in 1981 and finished 7th. For the next 12 years Bobby was a full-time tour player, achieving a ranking in the top ten and winning several major titles. In 1990 Hunter went undefeated to become World Straight Pool Champion, fulfilling a dream he’d had since he first picked up a cue, and winning a bet he had made with a friend when he was 18. In ‘91, at the Glass City Open, Bobby became the first player in the history of the MPBA to win a major 9-ball tournament after losing his opening round match. In 1992, while in New York City for the U.S. Open, he ran 225 balls at the prestigious Amsterdam Billiard Club, breaking the previous high run for the room by almost 60 balls. The record stood for 8 years. In the early ‘90s, Bobby was elected president of the MPBA, (the players association) and also sat on the boards of the PBT and the BCA. He was also chosen to be captain of the American team in the Mosconi Cup for the first two years of the event. Television appearances include “Eye on America” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”.
