About Gabriel Owen
|
| Gabe “The Babe” Owen, originally from Wichita, Kansas, totally shocked the pool community with his undefeated run through the 2004 U.S. Open, at the age of twenty-seven. Nationally unknown before then, he became an instant pool celebrity when this win catapulted him to fame; as he has graced the front covers of billiard magazines, plays tournaments on ESPN2 and Fox Sports, and conducts interviews with news media organizations about his illustrious position. This amazing success has taken years to develop. The Babe’s competitive nature began to shine through at the age of seven with T-ball, and continued for the next seven years through playing and umpiring baseball. His seriously comical personality on the baseball field, combined with team participation and determination to win were a few of his winning attributes, and lead to his All-Star status every year. By the age of fourteen, he exchanged the sport of baseball for billiards and practiced hours upon hours at Shooters Club in Wichita. At the age of seventeen, his mother & stepfather accompanied him on a trip to Las Vegas where he placed in a tournament and won $1,200. Within a week of that, he beat a local gambler in Wichita out of $5000, and decided to use the money to explore his options in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There he met good friends and road players, including Jeremy Jones and Michael Coltrain, and spent the next several years as a serious road player and high stakes gambler. His largest one time match as a road player was for $30,000, which took two hours to win. After about five years of dedicated road playing, and after being robbed twice, he temporarily became frustrated with that grueling lifestyle. He decided to give up the road playing for awhile and moved back to Wichita, Ks. to work with his father making custom cues. But it didn’t take long for him to get the travel bug again, and after eighteen months of working with his father, he made a mental commitment to join the pro tour. Over the past few years, he continues to experience many joys of victory, as well as the agony of defeat as he matches up with other top players from all over the world. Although he had several individual sponsors in the past, he recently signed an exclusive sponsorship contract with Mueller Recreational Products, and promotes his own line of “Gabe Owen Cues” made by custom cue maker Troy Downey, which are available through Mueller. |
