About Adam Wheeler
|
| He’s known as the Free Wheeler, often taking only 15 minutes to win a tournament match. If there’s a question in his home pool room, everyone says, “Ask Adam.” A student of the game, Wheeler has the knowledge and the execution for 9-ball, 8-ball, straight pool, one-pocket, snooker and billiards. But most people don’t know that Wheeler is a working man, playing Director of Ops during the day while incorporating his second computer service business by night. What about pool? Adam says, “My life is first, pool is not.” This perspective is not without its gains as Wheeler has turned in several wins on the Fury Florida tours, has been consistent on the Florida Pro Tour for years and will be a force in the future as he wants to “play every tournament in the world.”
Wheeler discovered pool when he was 5-years-old, playing pool in his grandfather’s basement. He was a natural learner and had the insight to practice his draw shot at the age of 6. When he was old enough to drive, he and his friends would venture to a local truck stop to play for dollar bills on the coin op 9-foot. Later, while playing Division 1 basketball at the University of Buffalo, Wheeler began playing at the pool halls on campus and entering the school pool tournaments. By the end of his sophomore year, Wheeler was winning every single campus tournament and continued to do so until graduation. It was during this time that he began frequenting New York pool halls, receiving a more formal education while making games in straight pool and one-pocket. After graduating with a degree in Finance and MIS, Wheeler made his living playing pool in Buffalo, taking side trips to Toronto for snooker and 9-ball. In 1993, he moved to Florida and found a gig as a house pro and sponsorship for Florida Pro Tour events. He began cashing after he gained seasoning, going from a rank of 70th to his eventual highest rank, 5th.
During this time, Wheeler was a project engineer by day and a pool player by night until he started his own business building custom computers. This setup afforded him the chance to take a road trip, hitting up the 1999 US Open 9-ball and One-Pocket events while visiting old haunts in between.
Several years later, coinciding with the lapse of the Florida Pro Tour, computer giant Dell put Wheeler out of business and he was back to work taking on the opportunity for his current position as Director of Ops. For nearly two years, he slowed down on pool, playing with a house cue and entering only a few tournaments in his home room, Pro Billiards of Orlando. This is where he met his girlfriend Jessica Barnes who Wheeler says sparked his interest in pool again. He began playing several tournaments a week and was back on the tables, just in time for the emergence of the Seminole Florida Pro tour. Wheeler turned in a 4th place finish out of the gate and continued and later joined the Fury tour.
As of late, Wheeler is concentrating on building his business which will allow him to play and travel to future events including the US Open , Derby City and of course, all of the IPT events.
