About Jimmy White
Jimmy White’s best displays of the 2004/05 season came on home turf at the Masters. Inevitably receiving massive support at Wembley from his army of fans, the Whirlwind scored two amazing comeback victories, coming from 5-2 down to beat Matthew Stevens 6-5 then edging out Mark Williams in another final frame decider after trailing 5-4. It wasn’t just White’s snooker that was drawing the headlines – he received considerable publicity from his sponsorship deal with HP Sauce which meant him changing his name to Jimmy Brown for the duration of the tournament. His run was brought to an end at the semi-final stage as he suffered a 6-1 reverse against fellow crowd favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan. Despite failing to reach the quarter-finals of any other tournament during the season, White rose three places in the rankings to regain a place among the top eight. This was mainly a consequence of his outstanding 2003/04 campaign in which he played his best snooker for a decade. One of the greatest moments of his career, and the most emotional occasion snooker had witnessed in years, came at the Daily Record Players Championship at the SECC in Glasgow. To the delight of his millions of supporters around the world, White overturned Paul Hunter 9-7 to score his first ranking event title in 12 years. “I had to keep believing that I had it in my heart to win,” he said. “It hasn’t sunk in yet because I’m used to getting beaten in finals!” he said. The Londoner also reached the semi-finals of the Travis Perkins UK Championship and the Masters as well as the final of the European Open. Father-of-five White has been a runner-up at the Crucible six times, including a heart-breaking 18-17 defeat to Stephen Hendry in his last appearance in the final in 1994. Hendry, in fact, has beaten him four times in the final and came from 14-8 behind to triumph 18-14 in 1992. Steve Davis (1984) and John Parrott (1991) are the other two players to have denied White the crowning glory at Sheffield.
